3 Reasons Why Virtualization Is Changing the Technology Industry
If virtualization hasn’t caught your eye by now, it will. The technology industry knows a good thing when it gets it and virtualization is a good thing.
Virtualization allows for consolidation and reduction of physical servers and desktops, thus reducing costs and increasing energy savings. Virtual technologies, such as VMware and XenSource, are constantly improving.
In a nut shell, virtualization is good for everyone, including the environment.
The Three Reasons
-
Save Money, Cut Costs, and Take Control
Virtualization cuts spending, and allows more control over the infrastructure. Reducing purchases, while increasing performance. Example: Consolidate 20 servers down to 5.
-
Friendlier to the Environment
Sean Donahue from Dell said in an EcoGeek interview, “(Virtualization) enables customers to further consolidate their IT infrastructures with reduced physical and energy footprints.”
-
Simplify System Management
Reduce maintenance and staff time spent managing overwhelming amounts of hardware. Example: Use VMware’s Converter to convert physical machine to virtual, for free.
Future Potential
Gartner reported on May 8, 2007, “The total number of virtual machines deployed worldwide is expected to increase from 540,000 at the end of 2006 to more than 4 million by 2009.” Be reminded that these statistics came from documented installs, and isn’t including the many more un-documented installs out there. Meaning the numbers are likely much higher.
In my own experiences with virtualization, all I can say is I can’t get enough of it. The truth is that virtualization is a rock solid solution, that has a positive history. Life is better and easier with virtualization because you won’t have to spend countless hours upgrading equipment and making unnecessary purchases. As well, the management is better (when done correctly) and saves time.

Experience Virtualization For Yourself, For Free
I encourage you to try the free virtualization products for yourself to see what all the hype is about. Head over the VMware’s Free Virtualization products page. I would also recommend giving Citrix XenServer Express a shot so you can get a feel for the different virtualization options.
